P. Diddy, Justin Timberlake, Taylor Swift, LeBron James, Olivia Wilde, Ava DuVernay, Pedro Pascal, Snoop Dogg… This is the list - not exhaustive - of celebrities to have highlighted the assassination of Ahmaud Arbery, a 25-year-old African American man who happened to be jogging in the street. Two white men shot him during the day on February 23 in the city of Brunswick, in Georgia (United States).

Gregory McMichael, 64, and his son, Travis, 34, initially argued that he took him for a burglar, took their weapons, and got into their pickup truck to arrest him. They allegedly acted in self-defense. This was sufficient explanation for the police, who had not then prosecuted them.

I'm absolutely devastated and horrified by the senseless, cold blooded, racially motivated killing of Ahmaud Arbery. #JusticeForAhmaud

As the BBC reports, the officers announced to the victim's mother, Wanda Cooper Jones, that her son had been involved in a burglary and had died. Only, a video of the assault and the last moments of the victim, taken with a mobile phone by a neighbor, surfaced.

Indicted for murder

On this video, we can see the father and the son waiting for Ahmaud Arbery who was jogging in broad daylight on the street. Arriving at the level of the pick-up from the rear, the victim is apparently taken to task by one of the two armed attackers who shoots him.

Tomorrow would have been # AhmaudArbery's 26th birthday. Run with me to honor him and raise awareness about racism and injustice in this country. #IrunwithMaud pic.twitter.com/q6xfQwoSnq

The video went viral, especially when celebrities like P. Diddy posted it on his Instagram account this week. Others have flooded social networks with messages asking "justice for Ahmaud Arbery".

Yesterday, more than two months after the incident, Gregory and Travis McMichael were taken into police custody and charged with murder and aggravated assault, as reported by the Georgia Investigation Bureau in a statement. The lawyer of the family of Ahmaud Arbery, Benjamin Crump, denounced a “horrible execution”. He also said that the two accused were not worried in the first place, because Gregory McMichael served as a police officer and then as an inspector for the prosecutor for over 30 years.
