The 34th Castell de Peralada Festival (Girona) has canceled its next edition, scheduled from July 2 to August 15, due to the health crisis caused by Covid-19, it was reported in a statement on Wednesday.

The organization has adduced its desire to preserve the health of the public, of the artists and of the festival team, as well as "the unknowns and uncertainties generated by the lack of confidence measures in the cultural sector in the coming months" as the main reasons for taking this decision.

However, the festival will study to carry out an "intimate format programming in streaming this summer", he added.

This edition had to open the curtain the night of July 2 with the American dance company Houston Ballet , which had also canceled its European tour to celebrate its 50th anniversary and which ended precisely with its participation in the contest.

The president of the Castell de Peralada Foundation, Isabel Suqué, stressed: "We must be totally sure that we can comply with sanitary guarantees that prevent the spread or regrowth of the coronavirus and, at this time of so much uncertainty , we believe that this is not possible "

He has highlighted the more than likely absence of international flights, the limitations in the number of attendees, as well as the difficulties and the impossibility of carrying out their own performances on their stages, " make it not feasible to raise the curtain this summer ."

In addition, the " marked seasonality " of the festival forces the organization to cancel its activity instead of postponing it and continue working for the next edition.
