Detectors of the SMART project from the astronomical observatories of Huelva, Seville and La Hita (Toledo) have registered the passage of a fireball over Spain at 82,000 kilometers per hour, which has been seen from Andalusia, Extremadura and Castilla-La Mancha .

As reported by the main researcher of the SMART project, José María Madiedo , from the Andalusian Institute of Astrophysics (IAA-CSIC), the fireball has been recorded at 3:43 am last night .

The phenomenon has occurred when a rock from an asteroid enters the Earth's atmosphere at a speed of about 82 thousand kilometers per hour.

The fireball started at an altitude of about 89 kilometers above the center of the province of Cáceres and from there it advanced in a northeast direction, extinguishing itself at an altitude of about 34 kilometers above ground level.

Due to its great luminosity it could be seen from more than 400 kilometers away .

The detectors of the SMART project operate within the framework of the Southwest Europe Fireball and Meteor Network (SWEMN) , which aims to continuously monitor the sky in order to record and study the impact against the Earth's atmosphere of rocks from different objects of the Solar System.
