(Fighting against New Coronary Pneumonia) Treatment of the First Case of New Coronary Pneumonia Lung Transplantation in Hubei: Creating a Miracle of Life

China News Agency, Wuhan, May 5 Question: The treatment of the first case of lung transplantation in Hubei with new coronary pneumonia: creating a miracle of life

On the 5th, Cui An (a pseudonym), a 65-year-old end-stage patient with new coronary pneumonia in Hubei, has undergone a double lung transplant operation for 14 days and is gradually recovering.

62 days ECMO sustains life

Cui An was diagnosed with New Coronary Pneumonia on February 7, and 11 days later, he received emergency treatment with ECMO (commonly known as "artificial lung") due to the deterioration of his condition. In the East Campus of the People's Hospital of Wuhan University, the medical team implemented precise treatment of "one person, one policy" and tried his best to save his life.

During the treatment, Cui An nucleic acid test was negative multiple times, which means that the new coronary pneumonia recovered. However, the new coronary pneumonia caused irreversible pulmonary fibrosis and respiratory failure in his lungs, and he was still unable to get rid of the ventilator and ECMO assistance. When the condition was the most serious, he inserted more than 10 treatment tubes throughout his body.

In line with the principle of "should be treated as much as possible", the medical treatment group of the central guidance group attaches great importance to the treatment of critically ill patients. The National Health and Health Commission coordinated the formation of the lung transplantation expert group of the medical treatment group of the joint prevention and control mechanism of the State Council to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of Cui An's condition and consider the implementation of lung transplantation.

Completed lung transplantation in more than 6 hours

On April 20, the lung source donated by a patient with brain death in Yunnan was successfully matched with Cui An. In the afternoon of that day, the source of love and lungs arrived at the negative pressure operating room of the Eastern Hospital of Wuhan University People's Hospital. It took more than 6 hours for the multidisciplinary expert to successfully complete Cui An's double lung transplantation operation. Therefore, he became the recipient of the first end-stage lung transplantation in Hubei for the first new coronary pneumonia nucleic acid transfection.

According to Lin Huiqing, a member of the National Lung Transplant Experts Group and the chief physician of the Department of Thoracic Surgery of the People ’s Hospital of Wuhan University, the risk of lung transplantation in patients with end-stage new coronary pneumonia is very high. 3. Wear positive pressure head hood to perform surgery.

"Medical staff in surgery cannot communicate with language at all, and completes the operation based on experience and tacit understanding." Lin Huiqing said that this is a kind of extreme challenge for the precision of surgery and physical strength of medical care.

According to Wang Gaohua, president of the People ’s Hospital of Wuhan University, for the treatment of Cui An, the hospital organized a rigorous evaluation of the expert team before the operation. The intraoperative surgical team cooperated well and the postoperative medical team was scientifically managed. Everyone spared no effort and cost.

Make every effort to create a miracle of life

At 8pm on April 22nd, 44 hours after undergoing a double lung transplant operation, Cui An successfully removed the ECMO that assisted him to breathe for 62 days. Soon, he regained consciousness and went through multiple hazards such as anti-rejection after transplantation.

Because of long-term bed rest, Cui's body strength is almost zero. The People's Hospital of Wuhan University established a rehabilitation expert group to formulate a series of rehabilitation plans for him including sensory auditory stimulation, neuromuscular electrical stimulation, joint activity training, acupressure, music therapy.

Drink water, swallow, cough, try to make a sound ... Cui An recovers step by step. At the beginning of the transplant, he could only move the unilateral eyeball slightly. Now he can complete complex movements such as pinching the ball and autonomously hooking his feet. His hands and feet can be raised 5 to 10 cm autonomously.

Li Guang, one of the experts of Cui An's postoperative management team and associate professor of the Department of Intensive Medicine of the People's Hospital of Wuhan University, said that Cui An's lung recruitment is better, and normal lung function is achieved. However, due to lack of muscle strength, he has not yet been fully capable of using the new lung, temporarily relying on the assistance of a ventilator.

Li Guang revealed that currently Cui An can try to get out of the ventilator for about half an hour every day. The treatment team intends to let Cui An resume eating on the 6th and try to get out of the ventilator. But his complete recovery is still a relatively long process. The medical team will closely observe and treat symptomatically to create a new life miracle as much as possible. (Finish)
