Children left to fend for themselves in the courtyard of a school in Marseille. - J. Saint-Marc / 20 Minutes

  • The mayor of Marseille sent a press kit announcing that everything was ready for school resumption.
  • Teachers and parents alike regret not having been consulted.
  • Benoit Payan, leader of the opposition, resigns from the Covid-19 crisis cell to denounce this lack of cooperation and this rush.

"From concertation". In his speech on the next school year, the President of the Republic Emmanuel Macron wished to reassure mayors, teachers, pupils and parents of pupils by assuring them that each decision would be taken in concert. What does not seem to be the case in Marseille.

However, the city sent a press kit on Monday entitled "Deconfinement: the city of Marseille ready for school resumption". In this case, the various measures taken supposed to guarantee the safety of children. Among them, "disinfection of playgrounds and all schools", "marking on the ground for distance from parents", "frontal thermometers and 250,000 masks stored", "ventilation of classrooms at each recreation by municipal staff and cleaning of common areas, and toilets, three times a day "," students will be greeted two days a week, Monday and Tuesday or Thursday and Friday "," the hours of reception will be spread out, as those of the canteen services ”. Without forgetting the screening of all municipal officials.

"There is something to be worried about"

An announcement that prompted Benoit Payan, head of the opposition at the town hall, to "resign from the Covid-19 crisis cell". "We left on Thursday telling us that we were going to move forward together, that the decision would be concerted, and on Monday afternoon I discovered this press kit. There is something to be worried about, "he said. According to him, some schools are ready, but others are not at all. “No one was consulted, not even the teachers' unions, the parents of pupils. We cannot make the decision to reopen blind schools like that, ”he worries.

He points in particular to the uncertainty linked to municipal staff, a large part of the deconfinement strategy resting on their shoulders, and to the numbers of students in the classes. Not to mention agent screening. "There are about 400 daily tests that have been done for a week while there are 12,000 agents in the city of Marseille," he points out. He also regrets the mayor's decision to reopen the canteens, a very large amount of work for municipal staff to avoid any risk.

"We have to take their word for it"

At Sandrine Gil, president of the Bouches-du-Rhône parents movement (MPE13), concern also prevails. “The problem is that there was no consultation. We do not know what they did or what they did not do, what there will be, or what will not be. We have to take their word for it. It hurts the heart, no town in France has done that. We were wandering around so much, they don't know how to reassure us, just send out press releases, ”she considers. She too is worried about the enormous burden that will rest on municipal officials: “They will have to disinfect all the time, we don't know if they agreed to do it so we don't know if it will be done. They should also be divided between household tasks and educational tasks. "

According to a survey carried out on its site, MPE 13 suggests that 60 to 65% of parents will not put their children to school in Bouches-du-Rhône. And Séverine Gil counts on the teachers to alert in the event of dysfunctions, as it was already the case before confinement, for the children who will return to school.

Political decision?

Monday, when no student will be welcomed, will effectively serve to verify that all the measures have been taken. "An absolute verification will be made, the Minister of National Education and the Prime Minister have been clear: if the measures are not applied, the school does not open," warns Virginie Akliouat, departmental secretary of the teachers' union SNUipp-FSU 13.

His union was not consulted, either, by the mayor of Marseille. “It is not a source of concern, but of weariness. Because we are used to it. Each time we sounded the alarm, we only had purely political answers "move on, everything is fine," she says.

For Benoit Payan, this haste can only be a political strategy. “We were in concert which enabled us to move forward on a certain number of subjects. But apparently the deconfinement makes some people close to Gaudin want to go back to the electoral battle when all the indicators are red. It's the children's health and ours that is at stake, ”he warns.
