French women are confined to their TV sets. Since the entry into force of containment, the time spent by the population in front of the small screen breaks records. A historic peak was reached in April, with 4 hours and 40 minutes on average per day and per person, according to data published by Médiamétrie Monday. Compared to March, it is eleven minutes longer.

In a press release published on April 23, Médiamétrie stated that "the increase in the audience is observed from 8 am in the morning and is confirmed throughout the day", with peaks "markedly more marked" and which " at the time of the news logs of 1 and 8 pm ”. In addition, viewing time jumped by around 50% among 15-24 year olds.

On the channel side, TF1 is the most watched with an audience share of 18.9%, ahead of France 2 (14.3%) and M6 (9%).

BFMTV, the most followed news channel

Concerning continuous news channels, BFMTV is ahead of its competitors with an audience share of 3.4%. Next come LCI (1.6%), CNews (1.4%) and Franceinfo (0.6%). LCI is the only one to see its audience share increase, by 0.1%, compared to March while that of BFMTV, over the same period, marks a decline of 0.7%.

Among the DTT channels, generally in decline, TMC (-0.4 point between March and April at 2.7%) remains ahead of C8 (-0.7 point at 2.4%). W9 was stable at 2.7% and RMC Découverte gained 0.4 points to 2.5%. France 4, which changed into an educational channel on March 23, lost 0.4 points to 1.2%.

These exceptional audiences, which mainly benefit the news, family films and flagship entertainment programs, however, have a bitter taste for the channels because the economic crisis brought about by the Covid-19 will drop their advertising revenues, sinking their financial perspectives.
