When the containment was put in place in mid-March, the shelters of the Society for the Protection of Animals (SPA) were forced to close. At the same time, the association continued to collect animals in its 55 shelters, whose maximum capacity was almost reached.

After four weeks of closure, the association managed to gain permission to reopen them through the introduction of a contactless adoption process, reports the Huffington Post. While many animals were still arriving in shelters, the structure had to find a solution to avoid hundreds of euthanasia, due to the confinement rules excluding shelters from any visit.

Four hundred animals adopted since April 16

The Ministry of the Interior therefore authorized the resumption of adoptions. The SPA had to modify its site, create a specific IT system, teach employees a new way of working to avoid contact but also buy new equipment for each adoption.

"The veterinary fees" are what cost the association the most, explained Jean-Charles Fombonne, the president of the SPA. "We had to use liberal veterinarians, so we had to pay additional costs," he said. It is a large sum, of the order of 140,000 to 150,000 euros ”. A total of 400 animals have been able to be adopted via this system since April 16.
