# Climate crisis, living alone can't be solved

Earth Day, on the occasion of Climate Change Week, the Ministry of Environment created a poster and was criticized strongly by environmental groups. The poster looked pretty good at first glance. In the blue sea, the phrase 50th anniversary of Earth Day was written, and the iceberg contained a way of practicing life to protect the environment.

1. Please use public transportation and practice walking in close distance.
2. Unplug unused appliances.
3. Dispose of recyclable waste separately.
4. Please use a shopping cart instead of a plastic bag.
5. Use a tumbler instead of a disposable cup.

The reason why environmental groups are excited about this poster is simple. This is because the same words are emphasized like a parrot every year, even though we cannot solve climate change through practice in our lives .

For example, 'Let's use public transportation.' Korea already boasts a very high rate of public transportation. And 1.5 million cars are sold each year, and they run an average of 14,000 km per vehicle. Already more than 22 million cars are already in circulation, and there are so many people using cars that it is frustrating to use public transportation. In addition, most public transportation buses have limitations in solving climate change problems using diesel or natural gas.

Let's look at overseas cases. Automakers are responsible for making cars with very good fuel efficiency, and furthermore, regulations for making and selling oil-free electric cars. Consumers who buy a car that meets the standards contribute to solving the climate change problem without having to do anything. Moreover, the supply of electric buses, rather than diesel and LNG buses, has been expanded.

'Unplug unused appliances'So is it. Electricity used in Korean homes is about 15% of total electricity consumption. Since it has been known that standby power is a problem in the past, many efforts have been made to reduce it, and as a result, standby power has been greatly reduced, so TV is about 1 watt per hour and assuming 18 hours of standby time per day is about 18 watt hours (Wh). Then, the standby power used by one TV for a month is 540 Wh. The electricity used by one household per month uses 300,000 Wh (300 kWh), which is only 0.18% of the total power consumption. Of course it is good to save. However, the performance is too low for the effort.

Overseas, the energy rating system is applied, so products with excessive electricity consumption are thrown out. The EU has established and applied vacuum cleaner power consumption regulations. This is to prevent the sale of products that consume excessive electricity or use motors with low efficiency by increasing the suction power more than necessary. If you go to a consumer electronics store, there are many low-efficiency products, and blocking these products will help you save more energy than reducing standby power in every household.

'Separate collection, plastic bags, and disposable cups' are more of a garbage issue than a climate change issue. Garbage is a problem, of course, but it is definitely a different problem from climate change. Reducing disposable packaging is not directly related to climate change response.

Let's do it properly.

The issue of climate change is a result of increasing greenhouse gas emissions. Greenhouse gases should be reduced. So where does greenhouse gas come from? It comes out a lot when it comes to making electricity from thermal power plants. When generating the same amount of electricity, coal-fired power plants emit the most greenhouse gases. As an alternative, gas-fired power generation, which is often referred to as an alternative, is also harmful to climate change because of its high greenhouse gas emissions. It is not urgent to reduce standby power, but it needs to significantly expand solar and wind power.

Another source of greenhouse gas emissions is automobiles. It accounts for 15% of Korea's greenhouse gas emissions. It is currently difficult to economically and socially allow the car to be completely removed. Therefore, it should be replaced with the least troubled vehicle, which is the electric vehicle. Many countries plan to increase the supply of electric vehicles at the fastest possible speed. European countries have put in place strong carbon dioxide emission regulations since this year, such as imposing a fairly fine if they do not sell more than a certain percentage of electric vehicles. In large cities such as Beijing, China, electric vehicle license plates were registered quickly, and oil vehicle license plates were received through lottery.

In addition, in order to prevent climate change, new technologies must be developed that completely reverse the process method of steel mills. As POSCO and Hyundai Steel make steel, the amount of greenhouse gases emitted by them reaches 20% of Korea. Steel companies argue that greenhouse gas emissions are inevitable. With current technology, there are clear limits to reducing greenhouse gases.

As the recent corona crisis reduced economic activity, it was reported that the air was clear and nature was alive. However, climate change is still ongoing. The climate crisis is only getting a little attention because of the corona. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) said that the government of the Ministry of Strategy and Finance should come forward by prescribing carbon taxes to prevent the collapse of the economy due to a strong climate crisis. Larry Pink, CEO of Blackrock, the world's largest asset manager, said he would not invest in a fossil fuel-dependent industry, saying that the economic crisis will come.

The climate crisis says that to save electricity from coal, you unplug it, take a bus that burns natural gas, and use a tumbler instead of a paper cup. No.

It can only be changed by the government, the National Assembly, and corporations.
