Methanisation is a technical process which, through the degradation of organic waste, produces biogas and digestate, a moist product, rich in organic matter, which serves as a fertilizer for the soil.

Two advantages in this case. We recycle waste, and we participate in saving the environment and protecting biodiversity. It is an innovative and young sector in France. The different actors must therefore learn by walking.
We need to go deeper, with what scientists call the stages of anaerobic digestion.

Step number 1 : feeding the digester. Slurry, manure, intermediate crops, lawn mowing, canteen scraps, grain scraps, agro-industry by-products are needed. Second step : anaerobic digestion. In the methanizer, anaerobic bacteria transform the waste into biogas and digestate. Third step : enhancing the digestate. It is a 20% liquid and 80% solid product, a fertilizer that is applied when the plants need it most. Fourth step : the development of biogas in cogeneration. We supply a so-called cogeneration engine to produce electricity. Fifth and last step : the conversion of biogas into biomethane. It is injected into the natural gas circuit that powers our homes. Or the production of CNG for motor vehicles. But there, you have to adapt the engine.

It is in Poitiers, during the Annual General Assembly of the Association of Methanizers of France that we meet Yves Debien. He is one of the two partners of GAEC "La Baie des Champs" located in Sèvres-Anxaumont. This GAEC La Baie des Champs has an important methanisation unit, but also a composting platform. With this man, it is an opportunity for us to understand the difference between composting and anaerobic digestion.
