Adeline Dieudonné had to stop working on her next novel, because it "telescopes a little" with the events related to the coronavirus. Guest of "The voice is delivered" this Sunday on Europe 1, the author of "Real life" explains that she therefore takes advantage of this period to "explore her characters".

INTERVIEW

She is one of those writers who find it difficult to move forward on their next book during confinement. A year and a half after the resounding success of La REAL LIFE , Adeline Dieudonné was working on her new novel, but the coronavirus and its consequences on freedom of movement decided otherwise. This phenomenon is all the stronger since this new book "telescopes a bit with the news", indicates the Belgian woman of letters at the microphone of "The voice is book", this Sunday on Europe 1.

"I need to step back and take time to understand the events"

"I need to have perspective to be able to continue to advance in the intrigue of my new novel, because I cannot disregard what is happening today" she indicates . "So it takes time for me to understand the events, and as we are in the middle [the coronavirus crisis, editor's note], we don't have the distance." But Adeline Dieudonné does not remain inactive for all that: in addition to taking care of her "vegetable garden" and her "chicken coop" south of Brussels, she "explores the characters" of her new novel.

News about the characters

"Rather than advancing in the main plot, I write short news about the characters. I take one and explore his life, his past, it's like spin-offs . But I don't know not if it’s going to be in the novel. " A work that allows the writer to better understand the psychology of the protagonists of her next work, but also to immerse herself "in the setting in which they evolve". A process all the more pleasant since Adeline Dieudonné thinks that she "would not have taken the time to do it in normal times". "From this point of view, confinement is therefore pretty good."

The "second" novel will do good

But once the restrictions are lifted in Belgium, she intends to start moving forward on her story, because Real life begins to be a bit cumbersome on a daily basis. "At one point it's tiring, especially the foreign promotion, you have to start all over again each time. The second book will do good, I'm so fed up that I am asked if I am writing it I want him to come out so that they stop asking me the question. "
