Woodkid promises a return to the stage "even more vehement" - NEWSCOM / SIPA

  • Woodkid has released a new song, Goliath , which fits perfectly into the news.
  • The clip reached nearly a million views in a week, and the French musician promises that his next album will be released this year.

After seven years of absence, the gifted Woodkid returns with Goliath , an uppercut piece with a prophetic clip, produced before the pandemic, between masked protagonists, post-apocalyptic tension and humanity in the face of the unknown. The first sequence of this video of just over 4 minutes (860,000 views in less than a week) shows workers, protections on the nose and mouth, in a setting of European mining in the open sky, in the colors end of the world. Shot almost a year ago by Woodkid himself - he had already made videos for Lana Del Rey in particular - the images reflect the anxiety-provoking atmosphere of the current health crisis.

"We spent a lot of time in Asia, in Japan - it's something I haven't said yet, but there are Japanese choirs on the album that will be released this year - and I'm sensitive to the idea of a form of toxicity in the air, idea which does not date from today. The Fukushima disaster, the idea of an invisible enemy, makes me think, "says AFP Woodkid, noticed 7 years ago with The Golden Age , 800,000 albums sold.

The title's martial percussions marry the jolts of fragments of coal torn from the earth while the hero of this mini-film wanders, haggard, until the end of the chain of exploitation where he comes across an XXL mineral monster. A black screen punctuates the clip. Parable of a society which has not respected the environment and which pays the price? "It's nothing visionary, tempers Woodkid. I would not allow myself to hastily conclude or say that what is happening is a message from the planet. I have always been fascinated by the earth, the soil, the material of the globe, the human corrosion hitting our own cradle. ”

A return to the stage "even more vehement"

But as usual with this fan of David Bowie, the layers of reading are multiple. The lyrics - in English - "How could you be so blind?" Like the appearance of the fantastic creature, refer as much to the intimate as to the universal. This is confirmed by the artist - hidden behind a digital avatar cleverly studied on his social networks - who always preserves a part of "mystery", in the concern "of never closing the interpretation" of each.

Goliath's images  reflect "the scale of the human in relation to what he creates" and the verses evoke a "romantic relationship", with a common thread, the "creation of a monster". Fans are eagerly awaiting the sequel. Woodkid too, who promises "an even more vehement return to the stage" once the confinement is forgotten.
