This is an important step in the fight against the spread of the coronavirus epidemic: surgical masks, the unit price of which will be capped at 95 cents, are available from pharmacies on Saturday. A little over a week before the first deconfinement measures, the human toll of the health crisis further increased on Friday, with more than 24,500 deaths in France and 140,000 deaths in Europe 1. Follow the evolution of the situation.

The main information to remember:

  • The coronavirus epidemic has killed 24,594 people in France
  • Surgical masks are sold in pharmacies from Saturday
  • The second maps of the departments were presented
  • More than 235,000 dead worldwide, including 140,000 in Europe

218 additional deaths, negative balance in intensive care

The number of coronavirus-related deaths has risen to 218 in the past 24 hours, bringing the total to 24,594 deaths, health director Jerome Salomon said on Friday. Resuscitation services again show a negative balance of 141 patients compared to the previous day, or 3,878, he said. A peak had been reached on April 9 with nearly 7,200 patients.

95 cent masks available in pharmacies

Ten days after the deconfinement, the government decided to cap the sale price of surgical masks at 95 cents per unit, but not that of fabric masks, due to the variety of models and their provenance. These surgical masks will be sold from Saturday in pharmacies, and from Monday in supermarkets.

New maps of the epidemic, corrections made

The classification in "red" of the departments of Lot and Cher on the map established in anticipation of deconfinement is undoubtedly due to counting errors, indicated, in turn, the regional health agencies (ARS) of Occitanie and from the Center Friday.

CORONAVIRUS ESSENTIALS

> Partial unemployment: the parents' situation clarified

> A new inflammatory disease affecting children linked to the coronavirus?

> What will shopping be like after May 11?

> The French will have to go on vacation near their home

> Why going to the hairdresser will cost more after confinement

This provisional card, unveiled Thursday by the Minister of Health Olivier Véran, separates the departments for the implementation of a more or less strict deconfinement. In the Lot, "which is not at this stage among the most impacted by the epidemic", this ranking "has aroused strong and legitimate misunderstandings," recognized ARS Occitanie in a statement published overnight.

Massive reopening of schools on May 11?

The "majority of nursery and primary schools" will reopen on May 11, the date of the start of progressive deconfinement in National Education, said Jean-Michel Blanquer in an interview with Le Figaro .

"I think the majority of schools will reopen (May 11) everywhere in the territory as well as the majority of colleges in the green zone", from May 18, said the Minister of National Education in an interview posted online on the daily website. The government has set the maximum tonnage at 15 children per class, as part of its deconfinement plan, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Over 235,000 dead worldwide

The pandemic of the new coronavirus has killed at least 235,519 people worldwide since its appearance in December in China, according to a balance sheet drawn up from official sources on Friday evening. More than 3,303,510 cases of infection have been officially diagnosed in 195 countries and territories since the start of the epidemic. This number of diagnosed cases, however, only reflects a fraction of the actual number of infections, with a large number of countries only testing cases requiring hospital treatment. Among these cases, at least 1,003,600 are now considered cured.

Since the count made the day before, 3,982 new deaths and 70,199 new cases have been recorded worldwide. The countries with the most new deaths are the United Kingdom with 739 new deaths, Brazil (435) and Spain (281).
