In Paris, the reopening of schools will be reserved, at least initially, for a "priority audience", that is to say children of certain professions and dropout students, AFP said Friday assistant of the town hall in charge of education. "The mayor of Paris wants to be very careful" on the subject, explained Patrick Bloche.

Tuesday, in an interview with AFP, the mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo affirmed to work with gauges lower than 15 pupils per class, the scenario envisaged by the government, to ensure a maximum safety of the children and personnel.

"The idea is to accommodate between 5 and 10 students per class in kindergarten and a dozen in elementary," explained AFP Patrick Bloche, stressing that this decision had been taken with the Paris Academy. "Given the circulation of the virus in the capital, we must limit the workforce."

Back to school on May 13 or 14

The start of the new school year, announced from May 12 for French students in a very gradual fashion, would only take place in Paris on May 13 or 14. The idea is to first welcome, at least for the first three weeks, a "priority audience", he explained: children of certain professions (health personnel, public transport, etc.), single-parent families and dropout students.

A mother of kindergarten pupil received an email Thursday evening from the director of her school specifying that priority would be given to the reception of the children of "all nursing staff", "social workers", "RATP or SNCF staff" , "Traders", "teachers", "any family whose two parents must imperatively be present at the workplace and this daily".

To enable parents of dropouts to put their children back in school, the town hall and the rectorate rely on school heads to call families directly.

"We are in the process of assessing human resources", also underlined Patrick Bloche. "If we do not have enough teaching or service staff, the 652 Parisian schools cannot all reopen," he added. As for the colleges which, in the departments where the circulation of the virus is weak, will be able to reopen from May 18, "they will remain closed in Paris" if the city is still classified "red" at that time.

The government placed on Thursday 35 departments in "red", including the whole of Ile-de-France, according to a provisional map corresponding to the circulation of the coronavirus and the tensions on the capacities in intensive care.
