It is the overseas department most affected by the Covid-19 epidemic: Mayotte has moved on to stage 3 of the epidemic, with 79 additional cases in 48 hours, the ARS announced on Thursday.

In total, Mayotte now has 539 declared patients (including 235 cured), 4 patients in intensive care, and 4 deaths. It is the first overseas territory in terms of the number of people infected, ahead of Reunion (420 cases, no deaths). "Stage 3 corresponds to an active circulation of the virus throughout the territory," recalls the ARS in a press release.

The wave to come

"The epidemic wall is before us," said the director of the ARS of Mayotte, Dominique Voynet, last week. In this overseas territory of the Indian Ocean, marked by great poverty and limited sanitary capacities, the former environmental minister had indicated that she was "not very for" a deconfinement from May 11, while On the predominantly Muslim island, the inhabitants who observe the fast of Ramadan, could seize the opportunity to find themselves. In addition, the island is also facing a dengue epidemic.

In an opinion issued in early April, the scientific council, which is assisting the executive in the crisis, had classified Mayotte in "a category apart". He spoke of a situation "particularly worrying: more than 80% of the population lives below the poverty line, 30% of homes have no running water and the supply of care is limited", balancing the youth of the population (one in two inhabitants is under 18) and a high prevalence of obesity and diabetes, which are risk factors.
