He was discovered "unconscious" in his sobering-up cell during a round and could not be resuscitated by the emergency services. A 43-year-old man died in the night from Tuesday to Wednesday within the walls of the Albi police station, said Alain Berthomieu, the public prosecutor of the Tarn prefecture in a press release. The magistrate specifies that an investigation was opened for "investigation of the causes of death".

The victim was taken care of by the police early Tuesday evening in a city center street, "in a state of alcoholic impregnation". He was first taken to the emergency room where a certificate of non-admission was issued, hence his presence in the sobering-up cell.

The video surveillance images of the cell were placed under seal and an autopsy was carried out.
