We know the figures for mortality due to Covid-19 in hospitals and nursing homes. However, the number of people who died at home remains unknown. "More complicated to assess," it will be known "in June," said Health Minister Olivier Véran on Wednesday.

Public health France is responsible for making this estimate, from the analysis of death certificates, which normally mention the cause and place of death, and "we will have this answer in June," said the minister to during the session of questions to the government in the National Assembly.

Excess mortality at home

“Not because there would be a desire to hide anything, (…) but because it requires being able to process all death certificates, electronic and non-electronic, and to have statistics by territory that make sense, "he explained, questioned by the deputy of Ardèche Hervé Saulignac (PS).

“We received a first alert from Public Health France about a possible excess mortality at home, which would not necessarily be linked to Covid but perhaps rather to the medical complications of people who did not go to see the 'hospital,' added Olivier Véran.

9,000 dead estimated

The Ministry of Health reports every night the number of patients who died in hospital as a result of infection with the new coronavirus, as well as the number of those who died in social medical establishments in recent weeks. It thus counts 23,660 dead since March 1.

INSEE, which for its part publishes data on the number of daily deaths by department, all causes combined, said a decade ago that mortality in France had increased significantly in March compared to previous years , especially in people over 75 and in the departments strongly affected by the Covid-19 epidemic.

The general practitioners' union MG France, for its part, estimated on Sunday, from a survey of its members, that the virus could have caused around 9,000 deaths at home between March 17 and April 19, which would swell by more than a third of the current official balance sheet.
