  • Lozère was the only department in France not to have counted deaths linked to the Covid-19 pandemic. The prefecture announced a first death this Wednesday.
  • Despite an aging population, this rural and landlocked department had so far resisted the pandemic.
  • In Cantal, the other department which has also been preserved for a long time from the deadly virus, the death toll now stands at five.

It was the last department in France to officially present no case of death linked to Covid-19 (pending the count of deaths at home, announced for the month of June). The office of the prefect of Lozère, Valérie Hatsch, announced this Wednesday the first death related to the disease in health structure.

No details were given on the age and sex of this person. According to the ARS report arrested at Tuesday, 7 p.m., only two patents were hospitalized with Covid-19 in the department. None of them were placed in intensive care, unlike the previous week when a person had been placed on artificial resuscitation. It would be a person hospitalized in emergency since the two patients from the previous day are still hospitalized, according to the prefecture.

Low population and containment efficiency to date

Lozère is the least populated department in France (76,422 habitats). This is one of the main reasons for its resistance to the virus, despite its aging population (31.4% of Lozériens are over 60 years old). The effectiveness of confinement, the isolation of the department, located in the Massif Central and on the fringes of major communication routes, its low population density with a diffuse habitat (14.8 inhabitants per km2), are other reasons mentioned. . "Lozère is a rural area, it is one of the factors but I think it is not the only one," Laurent Suau (DVG), the mayor of Mende, the prefecture, had mentioned as an explanation. In rural areas there is a respect for the rule which is perhaps significant. People, when the state gives instructions, respect them. Containment is very well respected here. ”

In its weekly report stopped on April 22, Public health France did not note any death, either, in the social or medico-social centers (in particular the Ehpad) of Lozère.

Five people have died to date in health facilities in Cantal, which has long been the other department preserved from the deadly effects of the virus.
