Travelers and carriers will have to adapt. To fight against the Covid-19 epidemic, the wearing of a mask will be compulsory for all passengers on public transport, and this for the three weeks following May 11, the start date of the deconfinement in France. Social distancing rules will also be put in place and will thus impose a “drastic” reduction in the number of people transported.

"Wearing a mask will be made compulsory in all transport, metros and buses, and operators will have to organize themselves, at least for the next three weeks, to allow barrier gestures to be observed, even in the metro", a he told the National Assembly. “This means, for example, that the capacity of the Paris metro will be (…) drastically reduced compared to its normal capacity. That it will be necessary (…) to condemn one seat out of two, to favor, by markings on the ground, the good distribution on the quays, to prepare to limit the flows in case of crowds, ”said the Prime Minister.

Wearing a mask in school transport and taxis

In return, the public authorities will endeavor to “bring up to the maximum the offer of urban transport” from May 11. Edouard Philippe also wants to "lower demand", by favoring telework, by spreading out schedules, and "by asking the French to consider that rush hour transport must be reserved for those who work".

Consultations must begin very quickly at the local level between the organizing authorities, users and transport operators to settle the technical details, said Edouard Philippe. "If it is necessary to organize flows, reserve transport at certain times for certain populations, we will accompany the authorities organizing transport," he said.

The capacity will likewise be halved in school transport, with the obligation to wear a mask for drivers "and schoolchildren, from college". Wearing a mask will also be compulsory in taxis and hybrid bikes that do not have Plexiglas protection.

Very limited train travel

Finally, interdepartmental or interregional travel will always be reduced after May 11 "solely for compelling professional or family reasons, for obvious reasons of limiting the circulation of the virus," announced the Prime Minister.

"It will again be possible to move freely, without certification, except (…) for trips more than 100 km from home, which will only be possible for a compelling, family or professional reason," he said. late in his speech. "We will continue to reduce the offer, to require a compulsory reservation on all trains - TGV or not, to discourage travel between departments," noted Edouard Philippe. "Ascension Thursday will be a great holiday, but I am making it clear to the French that this is not the time to leave their department to go on weekends," he warned.
