Thunderstorms hit New Aquitaine, Saturday 25 Apr 2020. - Nicolas TUCAT / AFP

The departments of Landes and Gers had, this Saturday, been placed in orange vigilance for floods by Météo-France, because of the heavy rains past and to come. The prefecture of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques had it placed the department in yellow vigilance, this Saturday at the end of the morning. Then, it was finally all of New Aquitaine which was placed, early Saturday afternoon, in yellow vigilance for thunderstorms. Météo France was not mistaken: violent thunderstorms accompanied by heavy rains crossed the region, this Saturday, causing great damage in the Landes and the Pyrénées-Atlantiques.

In Orthez, "the rise in the water level was extremely rapid"

Several cellars and houses, even an entire district of the town of Orthez (Pyrénées-Atlantiques) were flooded after the torrential rains that fell in the afternoon. The firefighters were mobilized on a dozen interventions from 6.30 p.m., according to the prefecture. “The rise in the water level was extremely rapid, residents and traders barely had time to take shelter when a good meter of water was reached. The material damage is significant: vehicles parked in garages are out of order, as well as furniture, "explained France Bleu the mayor of Orthez Emmanuel Hanon, while traffic on the road to Bayonne was cut around 7 p.m.

No victims of the floods

In the Landes, firefighters were called out of 42 interventions, according to the Prefecture cited by Sud Ouest , essentially "at the homes of flooded individuals". There were no casualties from the floods.

And this confinement in the rain should last since,

according to Météo France, the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department is placed in yellow vigilance for thunderstorms until 4 p.m. Sunday, just like Gironde, Landes, Lot-et-Garonne, Gers and Hautes-Pyrénées. In the Landes, the Gaves at Peyrehorade are kept in yellow "flood-flood" vigilance.

In yellow vigilance, Météo France reminds us to be "careful if you practice activities sensitive to meteorological risk or near a shore or a watercourse". It is also specified that these "phenomena are usual in the region, but occasionally and locally dangerous".
