The number of deaths in France has increased by 25% since the start of the Covid-19 epidemic, compared to the same period last year, estimates the INSEE. The departments most affected by this excess mortality are Haut-Rhin, Seine-Saint-Denis and Hauts de Seine.

In France, the number of deaths recorded between March 1 and April 13 is higher than that recorded over the same periods in 2019 or 2018: 93,839 against 75,100 in 2019 and 83,108 in 2018, according to still provisional data published each Friday by the 'INSEE during the Covid-19 epidemic. This is 25% more deaths than for the same period last year and 13% compared to 2018.

Regions stricken by the epidemic

From 1,780 deaths recorded per day on average the first half of March, France rose to 2,210 deaths per day on average during the second half, then to 2,610 between April 1 and 6, details INSEE. Since April 7, the figures tend to decrease with around 2,300 deaths per day for the period from 7 to 13.

The regions most affected by the coronavirus epidemic remain the ones with the largest increases in deaths compared to last year: Ile-de-France (+ 91%), Grand Est (+ 61%), Bourgogne- Franche-Comté and Hauts-de-France (+ 24% each). Three departments have at least twice as many deaths as last year: Haut-Rhin (+ 144%), Seine-Saint-Denis and Hauts-de-Seine (+ 128%).

Half of these deaths took place in hospital

As noted in previous weeks, men are more affected by the increase in mortality (+ 27% compared to + 24% for women) and those over 65 also (+ 22% between 65 and 74 and + 30% at from 75 years). Of the deaths recorded between March 1 and April 13, 51% occurred in the hospital, 24% at home, 15% in an institution for the aged and 10% in another place or an undetermined place.

Deaths in institutions for the elderly increased particularly from March 22 and are 50% higher than in 2019, says INSEE. In total, since January 1, 202,328 people have died in France, compared to 191,342 in 2019 and 195,085 in 2018. According to the latest official data, the coronavirus epidemic has killed 21,856 people, almost half of whom were living in nursing homes.
