Confinement, telework, medicines ... Europe 1 answers questions from its listeners during the whole period of the coronavirus epidemic. Friday, a listener wonders if methylene blue is an effective treatment against the virus?

Friday, Michel, a listener from Europe 1 who lives in Tours, wonders if methylene blue is an effective treatment for covid-19. Methylene blue can be used for two things: staining in biology, or antisepsis in the hospital setting. But in the case of the coronavirus, it is not effective at this stage of knowledge.

No efficacy, cardiac risks

Methylene blue is a dye used in biology, for example to stain bacteria to see them better. It also has a use in medicine, only in hospital: it can be used as an antiseptic in case of intoxication, and serve as an antidote. But in the case of a coronavirus infection, forget that. At this stage of knowledge, this drug has not demonstrated its effectiveness.
