- The government has entered into a dialogue with interested parties and the government's assessment is that the abolition of producer responsibility is the only solution that does not impose costs on the newspaper industry, says Environment and Climate Minister Isabella Lövin in a comment.

The announced waste paper regulation that would have been introduced next year was feared to lead to high costs for the newspaper industry. The government promised in early April that they would therefore return with a new proposal.

On Thursday, the government announced that they will come up with a solution that means that the newspaper industry does not have to finance the collection completely.

- The government is keen to find ways to strengthen the conditions for independent journalism throughout the country. The current situation is not sustainable for the newspaper industry, says Culture Minister Amanda Lind.

The municipalities, which have a basic responsibility for household waste, will also be responsible for the collection and treatment of recycled paper.
