The garbage collectors of the Pizzorno company under contract with the Paris City Hall collect garbage in the 15th arrondissement on April 14. - Jacques Witt / SIPA

With containment, the city seems to be idling. But if there is one place where it blows, it's in the kitchen. Teleworking is recommended, and the canteens, closed, there are many more mouths to feed at noon. If the food budget explodes, the same goes for the quantity of garbage produced per household. And, to the usual glasses and packaging, there is the medical waste of masks and gloves to protect against the Covid-19. As well as green waste, for those who have a garden. Suffice to say that the situation is complicated to manage for some readers of 20 Minutes  :

“My neighbor has been burning his green waste regularly since the start of confinement, because the recycling center is closed. Does he have the right to burn this waste? »Justine

“In my town, the collection of recyclable waste has stopped. Should we keep our waste for the moment? And for glass bottles, can we bring them to collection points? »Hirbod

"To carry out the cleaning of my house, can I call in the bulky items service to remove bulky waste in case I do not have the right to go to the recycling center? »Dominica

“I work in a recycling center. My company wants to reopen some sites. Is it necessary and compulsory knowing that, on the certificate of derogatory displacement, there is no box to go and empty the bulky waste? »Christine

Here are the answers we found:

Waste collectors are among these invisible but essential trades for the proper functioning of the nation and which the health crisis is highlighting. They too saw their work organization turned upside down: respect for barrier gestures, wearing a mask, flexible working hours, reduced staff… To the point that they too applauded from their balcony each evening at 8 p.m. To thank them, we can certainly applaud them from their window or balcony each evening at 8 p.m. You can also be a horse on the sorting of your waste.

Protection. First of all, to protect yourself and the garbage collectors, you should throw all of your potentially contaminated waste (handkerchiefs, masks, plastic gloves or wipes) in a plastic bag for household waste (sufficiently resistant, therefore, and with a functional closure system) to be reserved for its waste. This first bag, it must then be put in another household garbage bag, which you store at home for twenty-four hours - compliance with this deadline can greatly reduce the viability of the virus on materials. After which you can place this double bag with household waste.

The Ministry of Solidarity and Health has issued a practical file on the issue, to find here. On its site, the Ministry of the Interior is giving a booster injection regarding cleaning and disinfecting wipes, because throwing them in the toilets risks clogging them or obstructing public sanitation networks.

Collections.  Local authorities and businesses are mobilized to ensure that collections are maintained as soon as possible and under conditions. However, a large part of the recycling centers are closed to the public (do not hesitate to consult the website of your town hall to find out which services are maintained).

The sorting centers continue to operate, because they "feed the supply chains of other industries," said the Interior. Each waste in its place, and jobs will be kept: cardboard, plastics and other packaging go in the yellow trash.

Green waste. For green waste, if your recycling center is closed (there is a good chance for), you must store it at home while waiting for the reopening. The Ministry of the Interior also advises you to take the opportunity to put yourself in the compost. Well, you still need a composter…

In ordinary times, it is forbidden to burn this waste in the open air , like all other waste by the way. In which case, and if the hygiene services are alerted to the practice, you incur a fine of 450 €, recalls the Service-public.fr site. Derogations may however exist, "if there is no recycling center or selective collection of these detritus". Sorry @ Justine.

Glasses. You still have the right to get rid of your corpses of glass bottles by going to the terminals provided for this purpose in your municipality (@Hirbod). Do not forget to bring with you each derogatory certificate, the box "travel to make purchases of first necessity" checked (@Christine).

Bulky. Well, well, this is problematic (@Dominique), because, if your recycling center is closed, you must imperatively keep your bulky items at home, in your yard, your cellar, etc. Depositing them neither seen nor known in nature, on the sidewalk or in front of the recycling center gate is prohibited, under penalty of a fine of up to € 1,500 and the confiscation of your vehicle.

Other waste.  During the time of confinement, the French are called upon to temporarily store their used electrical and electronic products at home, said on March 25 Ecosystem, the body responsible for collecting and processing these products. Details are to be found in this article.
