The singer Christophe, at the Vieilles Charrues festival, July 19, 2014. - G. Durand / 20 Minutes

Christophe died. His family announced it on the night of Thursday to Friday to AFP. He was 74 years old. The singer had been admitted to intensive care on March 26 in Paris, for respiratory failure. Since then, he had been transferred to a hospital in Brest, where he died. His show producer said he was "unable to confirm if he tested positive for Covid-19". A press release from the artist's wife, Véronique Bevilacqua, published on April 10 did not mention the virus.

As of the announcement of the seriousness of the singer's condition, on March 29, messages of support had poured in, especially from the singer Keren Ann and Michel Polnareff, one of his old friends at the time yéyé.

Like Polnareff, Christophe - Daniel Bevilacqua by his real name - was already out of place in the "photo of the century", along with Johnny Hallyday, Claude François, Françoise Hardy and the others. If Christophe had his first successes, including the essential Aline or  Les Marionnettes, at the yéyé era, in 1965, he then freed himself with a unique artistic journey, made up of periods of media exhibitions or " crossings of the desert ". It was by the way out of one of them that he wore his mustache and long hair for the first time. Look that will accompany him until the end of his life.

Ex-idol of the sixties

A legendary figure on the French music scene since the 2000s, Christophe has marked several generations of artists. In recent years, he had sung a lot as a duet, notably in the double compilation Christophe etc , released in 2019 and 2020 in which he reinterprets old titles.

Cinephile, music lover, esthete and record collector, Christophe cultivated the image of a complete artist, open to the latest artistic trends, and has always known how to reinvent his music. A night owl and a maniacal composer, he will, during his career, be far removed from the sexist cliché that stuck to his skin when he started out as a “singer for little girls”.
