The musician Molécule composed an album aboard a trawler and gives this marine atmosphere during his concerts - Vanessa Bosio

  • Confined, like his fellow musicians, Molécule imagined a compilation of unreleased pieces of ambient electro.
  • The musician explains how 33 artists responded present for this album which must "invite reflection".
  • For Romain Delahaye, alias Molécule, music can "allow you to take a step back from the present moment".

Released a few days ago, the new compilation with 33 artists  Music for Containment is already a hit on streaming platforms. Imagined by the electronic composer Molécule, the album brings together ambient pieces, and the profits from the sales will be donated to the Fondation de France.

Arthur H, Flavien Berger, Bertrand Burgalat, Etienne de Crécy, Rebeka Warrior, Rone, Nosfell and Bertrand Belin answered the call. Romain Delahaye, alias Molécule, explains to 20 Minutes the genesis and the meaning of this artistic project.

How was Music for Containment born  ?

The idea was born very spontaneously, like many current initiatives. After some nocturnal experiments, at home, in confinement, I thought that I might have a role to play in this pivotal time. Music can serve as an escape, and allow an inner journey.

How did you choose the musicians who appear on the project?

I wrote to all my address book in fact ... The brief was quite simple. The only specifications were to compose an original piece of electro, exclusively instrumental.

Why ambient?

I find that it is music that leads to reflection, which allows you to take a step back from the present moment. This album goes against all the entertainment that flourished at the start of confinement. Music can have a quasi-therapeutic role.

And why only songs without vocals?

I think it allows you to better reflect, not to have your thoughts or your dreams polluted by the words of another.

What do you want these musics to reflect on?

I think you have to know how to appreciate the importance of what you are experiencing, and not just be entertained or busy. We were warned of this situation, we knew that respecting biodiversity could have protected us ... We always have this idea that we cannot stop. This situation proves the opposite: we can stop. We should not leave headlong as before when the epidemic is over.

What does the title of the compilation, Music for Containment  , refer to ?

It is a tribute to Music for Airports by Brian Eno, the immense master ... This album is a kind of manifesto.

With the end of the concerts and the cancellation of the festivals, what is the situation of the musicians with whom you worked for this compilation?

We're all confused. No one reacts the same. There are some who take advantage of it to learn. Arthur H reads a lot on music theory. Other artists have completely put music aside. Flavien Berger thanked me for the proposal because it put him back to music. Bertrand Belin sent me music played alone on guitar recorded with his phone…

So there won't necessarily be an avalanche of new music after confinement?

I do not know. It is difficult to have an artistic project in this scary period. We get tossed around a bit. Artists have a sensitivity that exposes them, even if we also have the chance to imagine worlds, create trips…
