Joaquin Phoenix asked New York State governor Andrew Cuomo to act. The fate of prisoners and people working in penal establishments worries the actor in the middle of a coronavirus pandemic. The interpreter of the Joker therefore requests the release of certain prisoners to stem the spread of the virus.

A message from Oscar award winning actor Joaquin Phoenix: “I'm calling on @NYGovCuomo to take action in New York by granting clemency to New Yorkers in prison. The lives of so many people depend on his action. No one deserves to die in prison from COVID-19. ” #ClemencyNow pic.twitter.com/CEFEkwVTBV

“The spread of coronavirus in prisons threatens the health and safety of all of us. When you are incarcerated, social distancing is impossible and ensuring good hygiene is not an option. Leaders must do their utmost to ensure that people in prison and those who work in prison do not get sick and spread the virus, "said Joaquin Phoenix on Twitter.

Global problem

Last month, WHO asked governments to act so that prisons can cope with the pandemic. Prior to Joaquin Phoenix's request, Andrew Cuomo had granted early release to 1,100 people for this purpose.

In France, short sentences will not be applied for the duration of the pandemic. Thus, in Nîmes, only those convicted of domestic violence among the short sentences will be imprisoned. 6,266 prisoners were released in France between March 16 and April 1.
