China has raised the list of cats and dogs from an official list of animals that can be eaten, against the backdrop of the Corona virus crisis and the great controversy about the reasons for its emergence and spread.
According to Chinese official media, the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture has published a new list of animals that can be raised for its meat, and excludes dogs and cats for the first time.
"It is the first time that the Chinese government has observed that cats and dogs are domestic animals and are not intended for eating," the animal welfare organization, the Human Society International, said in a statement.
Association figures indicate that 10 million dogs are killed annually in China for their meat.
It is reported that Chinese law does not prohibit the consumption of the meat of these animals inside the country, but this practice is limited to a small minority and raises growing opposition from the population.
