The storm will pass, and as a symbol of European and world resilience , the iconic Swiss summit, the perfect pyramid in the Alps, lights up every night to remind us of it. Many are the monuments that have changed color during this pandemic. Most of them in recognition of the efforts of toilets around the world.

The Matterhorn, or Matterhorn, depending on which side the Zermatt mountain is viewed from, is the best example in Nature. Also a technological milestone: "We have a special projector whose brightness reaches 3.8 kilometers. Neither I nor anyone else had done it before, " explained the artist Gerry Hofstetter , responsible for the projections.

The ritual has taken place at sunset since March 24, although the clarity of the Moon in recent days has moved the moment in which the beam of light explodes against the mountain. "Zermatt wants to give people a gesture of hope and solidarity in these difficult times," emphasizes Simona Altwegg, from the Tourism Office of the famous town, one of the Mecca of alpine skiing with 360 kilometers of slopes.

As in much of the world, freedom of movement is also restricted here, in this corner of the Valais canton, so only a lucky few can see the projection from the balconies of their houses. But the webcams around the Hore , as locals know the mountain, broadcast the images live each night.

It is not an easy project, not even for Hofstetter, who since 1999 has transformed buildings, monuments and landscapes into radiant works of art around the world. The Zurich artist, accompanied by three people - photographer Frank Schwarzbach, filmmaker Henry Maurer and his lighting assistant Lello Acquaviva - have settled at the foot of the mountain.

"We are 2,800 meters below the Matterhorn wall," he told the Swiss newspaper Blick . "It is very moving to see the 800 meter high images on this huge mountain." The artist is convinced that there is no better showcase than the Matterhorn, known throughout the world, to convey a message of solidarity .

A message that changes every day: "Hope", "stay home", "love" ... and the flags of the countries that are seriously affected by the virus have stained the snow of the summit. The first is in Italy , just across the Matterhorn, but also in Portugal .

Interestingly, the largest community of Portuguese outside their country is in Zermatt. "Without them, Zermatt would not be what it is today. Many Portuguese have remained here despite the coronavirus pandemic, more than 1,000 kilometers from their families. We thank them and think of them," explains Tourism of the city.

The highest ski resort in Europe closed its slopes due to the pandemic on March 14 and, at the moment, it does not intend to open until April 30. Zermatt is one of the domains of the Alps open 365 days a year thanks to the Theodul glacier.
