Across France, the picture is the same: domestic violence has risen sharply since March 17 and the implementation of containment adopted to fight the epidemic of coronavirus. A specific gendarmerie unit has been created in Haute-Garonne.

"The objective is to reassure the victims," says Lieutenant-Colonel Caroline Auzeville, who heads the public security office of the department's gendarmerie group. It is a circumstance cell created during the confinement period, to prevent any worsening of the situation. "

This structure, which is experimental for the moment, is made up of two female gendarmes who telecommute. It was set up to reinforce the usual work of local levels of the gendarmerie, such as the territorial brigades. These gendarmes recall "systematically within 24 to 48 hours the women, whether they have complained or not," said Lieutenant-Colonel Caroline Auzeville.

A questionnaire set up with an association

"Priority is given to people who were reported during confinement," she continues, adding that the gendarmes question these women on the basis of a questionnaire developed with the association France Victimes 31. But the cell also addresses cases of violence reported before confinement.

The women concerned are questioned via contact arrangements decided with them: SMS, telephone or through a neighbor. If the gendarmes detect a risk, they can then alert a social worker who will contact the victim and assess the risk and the measures to be taken, for example by offering a housing solution.
