China News Network, Chengdu, April 8th (Anyuan Wang Peng) A reporter learned from the Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Research Base (hereinafter referred to as the "Panda Base") on the 8th that the giant panda "Maotao" who had undergone surgery due to intestinal obstruction is now recovering well .

On February 4th, the giant panda "Maotao" (male, born on July 26, 2016) at the panda base suddenly experienced a "sticky" reaction characterized by lack of energy, tiredness, loss of appetite, and mucus discharge. Then the inspection results of the veterinary team at Panda Base showed that: "Mao Tao" duodenum was obstructed by the pyloric intestine.

"At present, pyloric or duodenal obstruction in giant pandas has not been reported in the history of domestic and foreign giant panda captivity, and clinical practice has no experience to learn from." A veterinarian at the panda base introduced that to ensure successful surgery, the veterinary team On the premise of fully ensuring that the epidemic prevention and control work is put in place, all relevant staff holding green cards in Chengdu are organized to "return to work". Individuals who require isolation at home due to epidemic prevention and control also participated in the discussion and consultation of cases online. At the same time, the surgical experts of the 416th Hospital of the Nuclear Industry are invited to give full guidance to the entire surgical treatment of "Mao Tao".

On February 10, the veterinary team of Panda Base and the surgical experts of the Nuclear Industry Hospital of No. 146 successfully completed the surgical treatment of duodenal obstruction of "Maotao", and removed the edible bamboo food mass that was obstructed in the body. "The operation process took only more than 1 hour, which is far less than the time required for various examinations, evaluations, and discussion of the plan before the operation." The veterinarian at the panda base mentioned above said.

It is understood that despite the very successful operation, the "Maotao" upper gastrointestinal obstruction before the release of severe vomiting and loss of appetite caused metabolic disorders, especially severe metabolic alkalosis, resulting in "Maotao" shock after surgery. In the face of emergencies, the veterinary team at Panda Base again conducted emergency consultations. After 36 hours of continuous treatment by the team, "Mao Tao" finally lifted the safety warning and woke up.

After the rescue of "Mao Tao", considering that the giant panda may grab the abdominal surgical wound, causing wound infection and even suture opening, leading to the failure of the operation, the panda base medical team conducted 24-hour uninterrupted care and follow-up of "Mao Tao" treatment.

"The 'Mao Tao' after the operation is very obedient. Every time we want to grab the surgical wound, as long as we call it by its name, it will look at us, and then take our hands away, no longer grab the wound." The breeder said that at present, "Maotao" has basically recovered, and the food has been changed from the initial bamboo powder and nutrient solution to the current bamboo shoots, and the defecation situation is also very good.
