After experiencing weeks of terror in fear of catching the emerging coronavirus, a 60-year-old Indian woman succumbed to her fears and chose to commit suicide, local police said.

In Fajwara city, in the northern Indian province of Punjab, police said Santosh Kaur committed suicide by taking an insecticide, after she complained of pain in the throat.

The family of the woman said in statements carried by the Indian newspaper "Deccan Herald", that she was afraid that she had been infected with the Corona virus.

Although the doctors told her that she was completely healthy, but only suffered from a slight sore throat, she was unable to escape fear, according to the family.

A relative of Santosh confirmed that she was afraid to pass on the infection to her children, so she decided to commit suicide by taking pesticides "Silvos", which are highly toxic in her room, where she died.
