Based on research published by the New England Journal of Medicine showing that COVID-19 could survive on different surfaces (which suggests that there may be a possibility that the virus is in a cosmetic product, apply in the skin or hair and there may be a risk of contagion through the eyes or mouth), the experts of the International Dermatological Clinic (CDI) have prepared a decalogue with 14 recommendations to follow for skin care during the pandemic :

1. Do not share makeup, and clean the sponges or spatulas used for its application daily.

2. Do not share hair brushes or combs. In case you need to share, you should clean them properly with alcohol products.

3. Do not use eyelash extensions during the pandemic. They are difficult to sterilize and there is a risk of inadvertently touching our eyes.

4. Before applying each cream, lotion or serum to the skin, wash your hands with soap and water appropriately for 20 seconds. If multiple products are applied, hands should be washed just prior to the application of each.

5. Clean cosmetic containers daily with alcohol if they are used or manipulated by other people.

6. The virus is surrounded by a layer of lipids (fat). When we wash something with soap, it destroys that lipid layer, destroying the virus immediately. Washing your hands is a simple but very powerful measure that has saved millions of lives throughout the history of medicine.

Therefore, constant hygiene with soap and water is the most effective way to disinfect, even more than disinfecting gels, since the water removes the destroyed viruses. And do not forget to wash your face too.

7. Disinfectant gels that smell good are more aggressive and cause more hand dermatitis. So try to use disinfectant gels that don't smell.

8. Immediately after washing hands with soap and water, use a moisturizer to prevent eczema. Since the hands are still disinfected after using cream. Try to use moisturizers without perfume or even pure petroleum jelly.

9. If dermatitis exists, you should continue to wash your hands frequently with soap and water, and hydrate them much later. The use of cotton gloves is recommended under the latex gloves, in case they have to be used.

10. If the dermatitis of the hands is intense by constant washing, it is necessary to use a cream with a corticoid for short periods of time, such as two or three days. From CDI we like creams that have Clobetasol, such as Clovate or Declobán.

In addition, exposing your hands to the sun for 10 minutes daily improves dermatitis.

11. The use of masks can cause allergies and dermatitis on the face. Use pure VASELINE to prevent, and if you already have dermatitis, use a cream with a mild cortisone (Adventán, Lexxema, Elocom, Diprogenta, etc.) for 2 or 3 nights in a row.

12. Wear short nails. This makes hygiene of the area easier and there is less risk of the virus remaining in the area.

13. Take 10 minutes a day in the sun without protection creams. It is necessary to synthesize the vitamin D that is needed. It is not necessary that the face is the exposed area: the hands or legs are good areas to expose and facial photoaging is avoided. Let's remember that ultraviolet A penetrates through the windows, so if the house is bright, you don't have to go outside.

14. IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO BELIEVE IN THE "FAKE NEWS" THAT DEFEND THAT USING CREAMS IN THE HANDS OR ON THE SKIN FAVORS THE PENETRATION OF THE VIRUSES. There is no study to prove it, and the American Academy of Dermatology advocates applying creams to the skin during this pandemic.
