  • After Ile-de-France and Grand-Est, Auvergne Rhône is the region that pays the heaviest price since the start of the coronavirus epidemic.
  • But, in terms of hospitalizations, resuscitation admissions and death, it is far behind the two big regions hardest hit.
  • "20 Minutes" takes stock of the evolution of the epidemic during the last week in Aura, where despite a sharp increase in the number of people who died from Covid-19, signs of hope are beginning to appear.

A number of hospitalizations in intensive care increasing, more deaths but also more returns to home. According to the last epidemiological assessment of Public Health France, published this Friday and based on medical data collected on the national territory last week, Auvergne Rhône-Alpes (Aura) is one of the four regions most affected by coronavirus, but far behind Ile-de-France and Grand-Est. To allow you to see more clearly about the evolution of the epidemic in the twelve departments of the greater region during the past week (since March 26), 20 Minutes gives you essential information to know.

Third region with the highest number of hospitalizations and deaths

As of March 31, according to figures published this Friday by Santé Publique France, Auvergne Rhône-Alpes came third in regions where the number of patients affected by Covid-19, hospitalized or placed in intensive care, was the highest. However, the situation has nothing to do with the health crisis in Ile de France and Grand-Est, where 8,515 and 4,646 people were hospitalized at the end of March (2,487 in Aura), respectively.

The situation is similar if we look at the number of coronavirus-related deaths observed in recent weeks. "Of the 3,523 Covid-19 patients who died during their hospitalization since March 1, 2020, 33% were reported in the Ile-de-France region, 29% in the Grand-Est region and 8% in the Auvergne Rhône regions -Alpes and Hauts-de-France ”, specifies Public Health France.

Our file on the coronavirus

A clear evolution of the virus in the last week

As many doctors and scientists had indicated last week, the virus has progressed markedly on the national territory. The region has not escaped this trend. In one week, between March 26 and April 2, the number of patients hospitalized in Aura due to the coronavirus almost doubled, going from 1,427 patients admitted to hospital to 2,706, according to the assessment carried out Thursday evening by the ARS. The number of deaths also increased sharply over this period, with 404 patients who died of Covid-19 in hospital on April 2, almost three times more than on March 26 (133 deaths).

In the region, all sectors are not housed in the same boat. In Rhône-Alpes, the virus circulates much more strongly than on the Auvergne territory. And between the departments, strong disparities are observed. Thursday evening, the Rhône, the most affected department, recorded 1,138 hospitalized patients (almost half of hospitalizations in the region) and 173 deaths (twice more in a week). The situation has also worsened significantly in the Loire, with three times more deaths observed in a week (66 dead now compared to 19 on March 26).

Slight signs of improvement

Despite these worrying figures, several encouraging signs, to be taken with all due restraint, are observed in the region. The cumulative number of people who were hospitalized for a time and then returned home continues to grow in Aura, as it does throughout the country. According to the ARS, as of April 2, 1,374 homecoming was counted in the region, or three times more than seven days ago (495). According to our information, hospitalizations in intensive care, increasing in Lyon for several days, would also tend to stabilize in recent hours, or even decrease in some hospitals. In establishments in the Lyon region, extra beds allocated to resuscitation to cope with the dreaded wave of cases of Covid-19 are even "returned" to the services for which they were taken. Signs of improvement to be taken with restraint of course, until the next assessments of the health authorities.
