At 20:23 on April 1st, a magnitude 5.6 earthquake occurred in Shiqu County (33.04 degrees north latitude, 98.92 degrees east longitude) with a focal depth of 10 kilometers. The epicenter was located in Changxugongma Township, and it is sparsely populated. It is 140 kilometers from the county seat and 5 kilometers from the epicenter. The average altitude within the range is 4,661 meters. At the time of the earthquake, surrounding towns such as Wenbo Town, Ariza Town, Changxuganma Township, and Waxu Township all felt the quake and were affected to varying degrees. Among them, Chajia Village, Changxugongma Township, is the closest to the epicenter and has been hit hard. As of 8:00 on April 2nd, one magnitude 3.0 aftershock and one magnitude 3.3 aftershock had occurred in the local area. No casualties were reported. The quake caused damage to 790 houses in 84 villages in 15 townships (towns, fields) to varying degrees, and affected 4,067 people, with an estimated economic loss of 79.83 million yuan.

After the earthquake, Shi Qu immediately launched an emergency response plan, conducted in-depth epicenter investigations to verify the disaster situation, condolences to the affected people, and did a good job of emergency transfer and resettlement and disaster relief. Aiming at the hidden danger points of post-earthquake geological disasters, the relevant local authorities conducted in-depth investigations on 28 hidden danger points of geological disasters in Zhamai area, and conducted telephone dispatch to the remaining 144 hidden danger points of geological disasters in Shiqu County to collect the hidden danger points in time. According to a preliminary investigation in Seda County, Ganzi Prefecture, the quake was strongly felt in Dongran No.1 and No.2 Villages and Menglong Temple in Niduo Town of the county. A preliminary investigation revealed that 57 houses had cracked walls to varying degrees, involving 214 farmers and herdsmen in 52 households and 2 monks.
