The major cinema authorities and the Ministry of Culture have voted for a temporary modification of the cinema code allowing films released just before the cinemas close to request a release when the latter reopen or to be available immediately on video on demand.

French people confined for almost three weeks should see their catalog of videos on demand considerably increase. An emergency law will now offer two solutions to films released at or just before the cinemas closed on March 14. They can either request a release at the reopening of cinemas, or be available immediately on video on demand (VOD), without waiting for the 4 months normally scheduled.

For their part, feature films that were not released are exceptionally authorized to be released directly on VOD platforms. Wednesday noon, 25 films never released, thus requested authorization to be viewed immediately on VOD. They will also receive financial assistance. However, they will not be available on Netflix, the 36-month rule remaining applied.
