A hall in the Rungis market was requisitioned by the police headquarters to deal with the excess mortality linked to the coronavirus. - ISA HARSIN / SIPA

Sacred reconversion for the Rungis market. As of Friday, April 3, a hall of the national interest market (MIN) in Rungis (Val-de-Marne) will serve as a morgue, indicates the police headquarters. Indeed, "Ile-de-France [being] now the region most affected by the coronavirus epidemic", this has the sad consequence of an increase in mortality. “In the face of the tension that persists throughout the funeral chain, and which should last for several more weeks, the prefect of police, Didier Lallement, has decided to open a large capacity reception center that meets the needs noted and to come, "said the press release.

The choice therefore fell on an “eccentric hall isolated from other pavilions” of the MIN. Anticipating possible criticisms as to the choice of this place which usually accommodates animal carcasses, the prefecture ensures that it "will allow to keep in the most dignified and acceptable conditions from a health point of view, the coffins of deceased awaiting burial or cremation ”.

The press release specifies that lounges will be arranged to accommodate the families of the deceased. They will also be able to go there from Monday, April 6. In addition, the prefecture specifies that "this place will be managed by a funeral operator with all the required expertise and experience".
