In nursing homes in France, concern is mounting, as the coronavirus epidemic rages. At the retirement home in Chateauneuf-de-Randon, a village of 550 inhabitants in Lozère, the staff decided to confine themselves, for fifteen days, inside the establishment, to protect their 53 residents from the disease.

If no case of Covid-19 was detected in this Ehpad, neither among the elderly, nor among the employees, the device was set up "by prevention", indicates to 20 Minutes Karine Chelias, nurse and director of the lozerian retirement home. Since Saturday, no one can enter or leave the establishment.

" A big family "

This astonishing device, set up in agreement with the town hall and the Communal center of social action, was proposed by the nursing staff, and was not imposed. On the other hand, only the employees who volunteered were confined on Saturday: 13 were confined within the nursing home to around thirty employees.

"Some nurses had already been ready for a few days, they had packed their things in their cars," says Karine Chelias. Inflatable mattresses have been installed in offices or in the living room, which usually receives visits from families, to accommodate nursing staff at night. “We are a bit like in a big family, in the evening, we all eat together, and we make a point for the next day, explains the director. We are a very strong team, united, with a strong mind. "

"They are all together, they all eat together"

And on the residents' side, the news was, of course, very well received. "Those who have the capacity to express themselves, they thank us, warmly," continues Karine Chelias. Because, of course, they watch the news, like everyone else. "

"This shows how much the staff of the retirement home is attached to its residents," says Bruno Durand (various right), the mayor of Chateauneuf-sur-Randon, who hopes that this device will be reproduced elsewhere. “It is an effective way to avoid the catastrophe in the nursing homes. Because confining all the elderly in their rooms, on a human level ... There, they are all together, they all eat together. I got them on the phone again this [Wednesday] morning, everything is going well. "
