The RN 116 is closed, prey to ground movements - Prefecture of the Pyrenees-Orientales

On February 3, an impressive ground movement, a consequence of the passage of the Gloria storm, made the RN116 impracticable in the Pyrénées-Orientales. The axis, clad with cracks and crevices, had been closed to traffic, cutting access to the mountains and putting tourism at risk, had deplored professionals.

Works, to allow the reopening of this central road in the department, had been undertaken on February 18. But had to be suspended at the start of the Covid-19 epidemic on March 17. "The company informed us that it was forced to cease all activity on this site," says the prefecture. The containment rules generated difficulties for the supply of materials on the site which added to the difficulties in implementing the barrier gestures. "

The damage on the RN 116 has evolved since yesterday. The ground movement is still in progress. Expertises are continuing. Deviations by:

No reopening date yet

Work was finally able to resume on Monday. “A team of fifteen people is hired this week, explain the services of the prefecture of the Pyrénées-Orientales. If sanitary conditions allow, this team will be increased in the coming weeks to speed up the completion of the work. "

But for the moment, no reopening date has been set. "The impact of the interruption of the construction site on the prospects of reopening cannot be defined today with precision, but the State services remain mobilized for the most rapid possible reopening of this major axis of circulation", indicates Prefecture.

The prohibition to cross the area affected by the storm is maintained, by vehicle and on foot. Since February 3, residents have made a (big) detour.
