It's been over a month since anyone heard anything from Sajid Hussain. Hussain lived a few months back in an apartment in Akalla in Stockholm with his friend Abdul Malik. But on March 2 he left his friend to take the train to Uppsala where he would move into a new student accommodation.

- He took his bags and left the apartment. Everything was as usual. He was in a good mood and happy about his new accommodation, Abdul Malik told Aftonbladet.

They spoke on the phone once after that, but since then neither Hussain's friends nor his wife, who lives in Pakistan, have heard anything from him.

- We are worried about his safety and well-being. It is very unusual for a journalist like Hussain to go anywhere without notifying us, his wife Shahnaz Baloch tells Al Jazeera.

Escaped from Pakistan in 2012

The journalist Sajid Hussain fled from the Pakistani province of Baluchistan in 2012. A few years later, in 2017, he received political asylum in Sweden and has since both studied and taught at the Department of Linguistics and Philology at Uppsala University.

In 2015, Hussain founded the online newspaper Balochistan Times which focuses on human rights and corruption violations in Baluchistan. According to Reporters Without Borders, his journalistic work could be the cause of his disappearance.

- If you ask who is interested in silencing a critical Pakistani journalist, the answer is if the Pakistani intelligence service comes first. Many of the articles Sajid Hussain published went beyond the limit set by the military in Islamabad for what it can allow, says Daniel Bastard of International Reporters Without Borders.

Suspected Pakistani intervention

Swedish Reporters Without Borders also believes that there are reasons to suspect involvement from Pakistani.

- Our colleagues in Paris have information that the Pakistani security service has a list of journalists that are monitored abroad. Whether Sajid Hussain is on that list and has been threatened because of his job, we do not know. But globally, we can see that there is a risk and likelihood of that, ”Erik Halkjaer tells Culture News.

Sajid Hussain has reportedly disappeared with the police and Missing people since March 5. The police have initiated a preliminary investigation into the case, but according to Aftonbladet does not want to comment on details due to prevailing confidentiality about the case.
