Gendarmes from the Somme make contact with the elderly in the department. - Gendarmerie of the Somme

"Hello, are you all right?" " In this period of confinement linked to the coronavirus, the gendarmerie of the Somme took an initiative to break the loneliness of the elderly, we learned on Tuesday.

Since Monday, the municipalities of the department located in the gendarmerie zone have been able to report isolated elderly people with whom gendarmes have started to contact by telephone.

The initiative had started last week, with phone calls made to army retirees and to widows or widowers in the department, hundreds of people affected.

"We had thought about extending this process to all the seniors living in the Somme," said General Mathieu Frustié, commanding the departmental gendarmerie group. Today, it's done.

"The phone call makes it possible to make sure that they are doing well and to reassure them," continues the gendarmerie, in its press release, which lists the different means of reaching the local brigade.

The device also allows the elderly to contact the gendarmerie for any request. They should not hesitate "to alert their municipality or any other structure in the event of difficulties in restocking foodstuffs or medicines".
