  • A hotel in Perpignan has been hosting a shelter for people infected with Covid-19 since Thursday. Seven people were there this Sunday.
  • They are followed by a doctor, a nurse and rescuers.
  • This device is accessible on a voluntary basis, for people affected by the coronavirus who no longer need to be hospitalized or people who test positive who do not need to be hospitalized, but who remain contagious.

In Perpignan (Pyrénées-Orientales), a shelter for people contaminated by Covid-19 has opened in a hotel. A system set up by the prefecture and the regional health agency, in the context of "rapid progression of infections" in this city. How does this center work?

The place, which welcomes this Sunday at midday seven people, soon eight, out of the 35 rooms made available, is intended to accommodate people "who need to confine themselves, but who do not necessarily have material needs to do so in good conditions, ”explains this Sunday at 20 Minutes Kevin Mazoyer, secretary general of the prefecture of the Pyrénées-Orientales and sub-prefect of Perpignan.

"It could be a person hospitalized because of the Covid-19, but who no longer needs to stay in the hospital, or a person who goes to a consultation center, who is be infected with the virus, but who does not need to be hospitalized, continues the representative of the State. These people remain contagious, however. For a certain number, they are, within their household, the only person affected, and risk transmitting the disease to other members of the family. "

Rescuers on call 24 hours a day

This confinement within the hotel can only be done on a voluntary basis. Once admitted to this center, people are not able to leave their room, they can only get some fresh air on their balcony. "But it's not a coercive measure," said Kevin Mazoyer, however. If a resident, after a few days, wishes to leave the hotel, he will have the right to do so. "The first seven people present are perfectly in the system, and follow the instructions, it works well," said the secretary general of the prefecture.

The confined people are taken care of on the spot by a doctor and a nurse. Members of the French Federation of Rescue and First Aid are also present, and take turns 24 hours a day. "They monitor that the people accommodated are fine, and bring them meals, prepared by the department of Pyrénées-Orientales, in secure conditions ”, continues the sub-prefect of Perpignan.

“The teams of the department have supplied, delivered and installed equipment [percolators, trolleys, fridges and other catering equipment], indicates the community, for its part. The department will also provide all meals [breakfast, lunch and dinner] until [this] Sunday, with the UDSIS [Departmental School and Social Interest Union] teams then taking over for the following days . »A cleaning service, carried out under secure conditions, has also been set up within the hotel.

Rooms "demarcated" from the rest of the establishment

It is the doctor who will recommend, once they are no longer contagious, the departure of people from this accommodation center. "The doctor gives them, when they arrive, an approximate number of days during which they will have to stay in the center, then an evaluation is made regularly," continues Kevin Mazoyer.

In this hotel, the rooms made available to contaminated people are "strictly demarcated" compared to the rest of the establishment. "When we opened the device, there were two or three customers, they were leaving gradually," said the sub-prefect. If the need arose, other rooms could be vacated.
