Ile-de-France hospitals are preparing for the wave of COVID-19 patients expected to arrive in the coming days. Everything is done to free up intensive care beds and thus accommodate the sick who need them. Europe 1 takes stock of the situation with Bertrand Guidet, head of the intensive care and intensive care unit at Saint-Antoine hospital in Paris.

"The first 15 days of April will be even more difficult than the 15 days" passed, Edouard Philippe announced on Saturday March 28 at a press conference. According to the latest figures, in France, 2,314 people died from the new coronavirus and 4,273 people are in intensive care. Hospitals are particularly affected in Île-de-France where the situation is becoming worrying. The region counted last night 695 deaths linked to the virus.

"It's a speed race"

These establishments are preparing for their worst week. "Tension is mounting, it's a speed race," insists Bertrand Guidet, head of the intensive care and intensive care unit at Saint-Antoine hospital in Paris. And for this race to be won, everything must be done to increase the capacity for resuscitation. On Saturday, 1,585 beds were occupied in Île-de-France by infected patients, that's more than 14% in one day. A few hundred beds can still be opened until this evening.

All the solutions explored to free beds

And to continue unclogging hospitals, in addition to the transfer of a few patients to the least affected regions, now patients whose health improves, can be transferred to continuous monitoring units, sort of convalescent homes specialized.

"We brought two patients out of our intensive care unit who no longer needed extremely heavy treatment but who still needed artificial ventilation. They were referred to centers, which can provide ventilation on long periods until the machine comes to a complete standstill. Anything that can help free critical care beds in Île-de-France is good to take, "explains the doctor.
