  • A mobile team from the CHU de Bordeaux, made up of doctors, circulates in the agglomeration to meet the needs of the Ephad.
  • She screens residents, notes the lack of equipment or gives advice to staff who are often worried and in difficulty.
  • The situations would be very different according to the establishments due to their level of equipment.

Before hitting the road like every morning, Marina and Marie-Neige take a few moments to return to their mission. Since Monday, these two geriatricians have taken turns in a special mobile team "Ehpad" also composed of a medical intern, an internal pharmacy specializing in hygiene and a paramedic.

Created by the CHU de Bordeaux five years ago, this unit used to pay daily visits to the elderly in the city. But with confinement, she now goes to sixty accommodation establishments for dependent elderly people of the metropolis. "They call the City-Hop unit of the CHU which makes an initial sorting out of their requests and, depending on the needs, we are called to go directly to the site", explains Doctor Marina Coutauchaud. Interventions that can last almost two hours.

Screening, equipment, advice to staff…

Faced with staff "in difficulty and very worried", they obviously have to answer "a lot of questions" as pointed out by his colleague, Dr. Marie-Neige Videau. Their interventions can last more than two hours:

"We do screening by collecting suspected cases of Covid-19, we help with decision-making - Should we hospitalize?" How to isolate a person? - we also help with hygiene, for example what equipment to use in this situation? "

The question of equipment comes up very regularly on the occasion of these “raids”. If this mobile team does not distribute masks and other gowns, it sends all requests to the Regional Health Agency in New Aquitaine so that it can send equipment quickly. “In normal times, these are already establishments in need of resources, especially human resources, so you might as well say that there it is likely to become very complicated if staff must be arrested. They are all very worried about the spread of the virus because sometimes they do not have the means to enforce barrier gestures, ”recalls Marie-Neige Videau.

A “very disparate” situation according to the establishments

In New Aquitaine, the situation is less serious than in other regions for the moment with 1,007 confirmed cases and 34 deaths since the start of the epidemic. This Friday, the ARS reported that reported cases of Covid-19 had been identified in around 30 nursing homes in the region. The authorities have also announced that "health SAS" for staff will be installed at the entrance of some establishments more affected than others. In Charente at Mansle, caregivers have decided to confine themselves to their residents.

At the level of the Bordeaux agglomeration, Marine Coutauchaud confirms that the situation is "very disparate" according to the establishments. "It actually depends on the equipment they have for themselves and the elderly," she adds. Good news according to the two Bordeaux doctors, it would seem that the distribution of it has accelerated since the middle of the week. While waiting for an improvement of the situation, not a second to lose for Marina and Marie-Neige who take again the wheel with all their team…
