Release of the Sorita bear in Béarn in October 2018. - Goulven Rigaud

Sorita, without cub. The Slovenian bear, released in Béarn in 2018, has just been observed in the Aspe valley this Wednesday, without cubs by its side, says Info Ours des Pyrénées, the official website of the State.

This absence of young is bad news for the associations that campaign for the protection of the bear and the observers who closely follow the female of Slovenian origin. Thus, in a press release, the Ferus association regrets that "the start of the restoration of the bear population in the Western Pyrenees is long overdue".

"We hope she had babies this winter"

Still according to the association that works for the conservation of bears, wolves and lynxes, Claverina, released in 2018 with Sorita, is still on the Spanish side of the Pyrenees and has not yet been observed in 2020. Ferus hopes so see her soon with the little ones. "We hope that she had babies this winter and carries our hope of finally seeing the long-awaited start of the restoration of the bear in the western Pyrenees," says the association.

Sorita and Claverina are the two bears released in the Western Pyrenees in 2018, so there had been no female bears for fourteen years. Sorita gave birth to two cubs in the Hautes-Pyrénées in the spring of 2019, but they had been killed by another bear.
