Confined to his home for a few days for suspected coronavirus, a prison supervisor at Orléans-Saran (Loiret) died on the night of Wednesday to Thursday, the justice ministry announced on Thursday.
The 54-year-old man, who died at his home, is said to have suffered a cardiac arrest, the same source added. He had been off for several days because he had symptoms of Covid-19 but had not been tested.
A dozen detainees tested positive for coronavirus
At this stage, in the absence of other elements, the Ministry of Justice has not confirmed a link between this death and the new coronavirus. Keeper of the Seals Nicole Belloubet said Thursday morning that 10 detainees had tested positive for Covid-19 and that "approximately 450" with symptoms are currently "confined in wings fitted for this purpose".
Among the ten detainees tested, two are incarcerated at the Orléans-Saran prison center, according to the management of the prison administration (DAP). Concerning prison staff, according to a report going back to Tuesday, there were 24 proven cases and 595 agents "in the fortnight", around fifty agents having already left quarantine. French prisons counted on January 1 more than 70,000 prisoners for some 30,000 supervisors in 188 establishments.
