  • Professor Didier Raoult argued on March 25 that "several states have already included hydroxychloroquine or chloroquine in their therapeutic recommendations for the treatment of Covid-19 as soon as symptoms of the virus are detected".
  • 20 Minutes considered these recommendations.

The treatment recommended by Professor Raoult against Covid-19 adopted by several countries? This was advanced by the doctor on his Twitter account, this Wednesday: "Several states have already included hydroxychloroquine or chloroquine in their therapeutic recommendations for the treatment of Covid-19 as soon as symptoms are detected of the virus. "

The director of the Institut hospitalo universitaire Méditerranée Infection in Marseille then listed these countries and a series of recommendations: China, Iran, the Netherlands, Belgium, Korea, from India, as well as New York City and the Lombardy region in Italy. 20 Minutes considered these recommendations.

Since this tweet, the French government published Thursday a decree strictly regulating the administration of hydroxychloroquine for patients with Covid-19.

  • Who did these recommendations come from?

Some recommendations come from associations of doctors specializing in infectious diseases: this is the case for the Netherlands, Italy and Belgium. For Iran or China, the team of Professor Didier Raoult refers to recommendations issued by the governments of these countries. The Korean recommendations were made by doctors and experts. Those from India come from the Indian Council for Medical Research, which reports to the Ministry of Health.

  • Do these authorities recommend treatment?

The recommendations clearly refer to chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine to treat patients with Covid-19. However, some bring reservations. Belgian doctors point out that the available clinical evidence is "very incomplete". The same rhetorical caution on the part of their Dutch colleagues, who point out that there is no approved treatment for this virus yet, or of the Indians, who emphasize that this treatment should not "instill a false sense of security".

  • What patients do they recommend treatment for?

Not all recommend administering the two molecules as soon as symptoms appear. The Lombards, the Koreans and the Dutch do not recommend it for patients with moderate symptoms, with the exception of those with risk factors. In India, the administration of these molecules is recommended for people at "high risk", asymptomatic caregivers in contact with patients or relatives of these patients.
