  • Eighteen volunteer staff have chosen to confine themselves to the establishment to "avoid contact with the outside" and protect the 59 elderly people who live there.
  • The decision, which came into effect on Tuesday, was made for an initial period of fifteen days. Among the 18 volunteer employees are caregivers, maintenance workers but also cooks and administrative managers.
  • No symptoms of coronavirus were detected at this stage among the 59 residents, who have not been in contact with their families since mid-March.

“Our only goal is to protect our residents from the Covid-19 epidemic. It was obvious. "Patricia Vandebrouck has chosen, since Tuesday, to confine herself with 17 other staff of the Ehpad Bergeron-Grenier de Mansle (Charente) in the establishment to" avoid contact with the outside "and protect the 59 elderly people who reside there. "We welcome people from 70 to 90 years on average, but we also have two ladies of 103 years each," explains the accounting secretary. And all this little world psychologically prepares to go to the end. "

According to the Charente Libre , which revealed the information, caregivers, maintenance workers but also cooks and administrative managers, all volunteers, agreed to stay with the residents 24 hours a day. The decision was made for an initial period of fifteen days. The goal is to "avoid contact with the outside" to "give yourself a chance to get through the current crisis," explained RTL Pascal Ramirez, director of this Ehpad managed by an association at non-profit.

"We started from the principle that the Covid-19 was not within its walls"

“We requisitioned the chapel, one of the entertainment rooms and a meeting room to accommodate the 18 volunteers. It's organized a bit like a summer camp, ”explained Pascal Ramirez. “Rooms where work had just been completed serve as dormitories, we settled in small groups of three or four. For the moment everything is going well. It must be said that the team is united, the group is living well, ”says Patricia Vandebrouck at 20 Minutes .

According to the latter, all employees would have liked to be part of this incredible adventure, but almost half of the employees had family imperatives. These help the "confined" by shopping, deposited on the doorstep. "They must also rest because they will have to take over when all that is behind us," says Patricia, who adds that the deliveries of drugs, food or equipment are ensured by respecting all sanitary procedures.

At this stage, no symptoms of coronavirus have been detected among the 59 residents, who have not been in contact with their families since mid-March. "We started from the principle that the Covid-19 was not within its walls and that we were going to do everything to get through it," concludes Patricia Vandebrouck, who, like the 17 other confined employees, shows no signs of illness. If there is any doubt, we will take the necessary measures, as in all other Ehpad. But, for the moment, we are not thinking about it. "
