  • Today, "The Widows of Malabar Hill" by Sujata Massey, published on January 14, 2020 by Éditions Charleston.
  • This Indian novel could have benefited from particular light during Livre Paris, where India was the invited country, if the show had not been canceled.

Holly Goli, contributor to the reading group "20 Minutes Books" and blogger, recommends Les veuve de Malabar Hill by Sujata Massey, published on January 14, 2020 by Charleston.

His favorite quote:

“The presence of jali walls and windows allowed the housewives to observe the life from which they were excluded. It was an intentional element of Muslim architecture, a way of including those who were on the other side of these screens. Perveen was unable to say whether the shape was that of a woman, a child, or a servant. All she could conclude was that this person did not want to be seen. "

Why this book?

  • Because this book is both a detective story but also a novel that highlights Indian women, their living conditions and the traditions and customs of their country.
  • Because Perveen is an endearing heroine. She is both a woman strong in her profession and who defends with conviction her rights and her vision of Indian women, but she is also a fragile woman who has her own demons that she sometimes has trouble forgetting.
  • Because this book is also an ode to women, whether independent or not. The author puts women forward in different ways and with great accuracy.

The essential in 2 minutes

The intrigue. Perveen Mistry is the first Indian female lawyer in her country. When a murder is committed in a house where men and women are separated, she is the only one who can investigate and render justice.

Characters. So we have Perveen and his family (his father but also the employees) on one side and on the other, we have the suspects of the crime and the potential witnesses namely the widows of the house.

Places. The story takes place in India and in particular in Malabar Hill, where the crime was committed.

The time. The plot takes place at the beginning of the 20th century.

The author. Sujata Massey was born in England to parents of Indian and German descent. She was raised primarily in St. Paul, Minnesota, and lives in Baltimore, Maryland. Before becoming a full-time novelist, she was a reporter for the Baltimore Evening Sun.

This book was read with. Lots of surprises and interest. I was expecting a detective story but I didn't expect to learn as much about Indian culture and the living conditions of women. It is really interesting to discover the life of Indian women and it makes you want to discover more.
