The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare scrutinized the preliminary figures for suicide for the past year published last January and released the final figures again on the 17th. According to this, the number of people who committed suicide last year was 20,169 people nationwide, 671 fewer than the previous year, 3.2% less than the previous year, decreased for the 10th consecutive year, the least since 1978 when statistics began to be collected became.

By gender, the number of men decreased by 212 to 140,078, and the number of women decreased by 459 to 6091. By age, those in their 40s and 50s account for 17% each, the highest percentage. Then, 60s and 70s accounted for 14%, etc., while those under teens accounted for 3%, the smallest percentage, but the only number increased from last year.

By prefecture, the highest number of suicides per 100,000 people was in Yamanashi with 22.3, followed by Iwate with 22.2 and Akita with 22.1. On the other hand, the lowest was Kanagawa Prefecture with 11.7 people, Kyoto Prefecture with 12.5 people, and Osaka Prefecture with 14 people.

The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare states that, although the number of suicides is decreasing, more than 20,000 are still dying, and we want to steadily implement measures to address the increasing number of minors in particular.
