  • After those of Andorra, the ski resorts of the Pyrenees have all announced their closure this weekend due to the health crisis.
  • An early closure for certain stations which thought to compensate at the end of the season for the shortfall in the February holidays, when the snow ran out.

This Monday, the meetings will follow one another in the ski resorts of the Pyrenees. Sunday, following government announcements to restrict meeting places the day before, officials in the areas of the massif decided to close all of the trails.

Friday, those of the principality of Andorra had already closed their season in advance because of coronavirus.

𝗙𝗘𝗥𝗠𝗘𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗘 - The health crisis in France is significant and we must close our ski areas. We know that you will understand this decision, which was notified to us by the state services, in view of the rapid spread of the coronavirus. pic.twitter.com/b6LzKUygAi

“First of all, we had to manage the customers who were there, disseminate the closure information to prevent them from going up to the station. We were also in contact with the authorities, in particular the Direccte to provide solutions to employees, to find out if we can apply short-time working, "said Guillaume Roger, operational director of N'Py, which manages eight stations in the Pyrenees and employs 790 people at the peak of the season.

The postponement of the unemployment insurance reform announced by Muriel Penicaud somewhat relieves the profession which had mobilized against the consequences that this could have on seasonal workers.

Mixed season

Operators are also now on the bridge to reimburse customers who had already booked their packages and those who have a year subscription. A loss of operations for many of them who intended to compensate for the lack of snow during the February holidays. Some were to close in April.

"It is a heavy blow for the stations, but there are more serious things", moderates Guillaume Roger in reference to the health crisis which crosses the country.

For N'Py, the season has been mixed. Because if the winter holidays were bad, those of Christmas had been rather good. The company announced in early March attendance up 10% compared to the 2018/2019 season.
